Actually, I think "damn yankees" came from a Bugs Bunny cartoon, where Yosemite Sam was a confederate, with his bulldog with tiny back legs called Belvedere ("Oh Belvedere, come heah boy") and the beagle/bassett type dog was a yankee trying to replace Belvedere as the Plantation hound.:)
