We was so poor that:
Cousin in NZ couldn't afford gloves & had to have a sheep in each pocket to keep hands warm.
Couldn't afford heating - Dad sucked a peppermint & we all sat round his tongue.
Only had a handfull of hot gravel for breakfast.

Peppermint! Luxury. Mum used to feed us dried apples for breakfast, a glass of water for lunch, and for dinner we'd just sit around and swell up.

I had to sleep in Tonga to be able to go over the International Date Line to do yesterday's work every day and would be brought back for the 40 minutes of my weekends off. But I was lucky!!!!!!!!!!
