My first plung into web pages..

Hi Al,

Terrific first go.

I'm with the others on matters of resolution, the grey text, and having an email address the visitors can use.

I'd also add soem "keywords" in the code (eg "bric a brac", "antiques", etc) so that the search bots from Google and the like can find and index your site.

Perhaps also a "how to find us" page with a map, directions, etc.

It must have been fun collecting all that stuff. I remember my mother having an old (then) Singer sewing machine very similar to the one in one of your pics.

Ill bookmark this page and take on your comments over time.
Ill change to 800 res, what ever that is.
The grey text was black, but it looked over powering. And Ill do it down one side, I did it to balance up the page

The hoster Im with, Webcity, have all these neat stats on the CP, the site has already been visited by Yahoo, Google and Hotbot.
I can also see who has been and from where, and even who has bookmarked the site. It really has some unbeleivably useless stats.
I will put in an email address too.

I think your web site should do well. You now need google to make you the first listing, so how about a special title to get yourself to the front of the list, something like "A" leave of the l :rolleyes:

By the way I went looking for a motor car on your site (remember I intend to come back this summer, cricket, fishing & painting) So perhaps you could have a wish list entry page on your site?

I just updated the site, and the uploader told me it uploaded ok, but, it hasnt changed a bit.

The website is probably updated but your browser cache hasn't,
hit the page refresh button and see wot happens.

Yep I tryed that straight away Bob.

I'm with most of the other critics, Al - the grey background just makes everything hard to see and the pics blow up blurry. Still there are better and more considered comments and suggestions further up the thread.
There must be some great bargains, though, you've not had to pay an arm or a leg for anything and you're ready to give a hand to anyone!

Al, here are a few things to try:

1. shift reload on your browser to bypass the cache (looks like you have already done this)
2. use an ftp client, file browser on the control panel or ssh to see take a look at the timestamp on the file on the server to make sure it has changed
3. double check that the uploader thing you are using is writing to the right location
4. make sure you saved the updates first before uploading
5. create another file, for instance test.html and upload it, then check to see if it is there

I think the front page doesn't pop as yet.

If you open the background and lower the opacity on it you will turn all the grey soft and it will be more of a background. You might even put a little bit of Gaussian Blur on it just to fade it out a little more so it is less of a distraction and more of a background.

Change text colour. Maybe get buttons for the headings so the eye is pulled to the things that you are selling. Hotlink the buttons to the page with whatever the button is about. If you need to do it quick and dirty just hotlink to a photo with a back button and an email and phone number on it.

You can work forever with these things. There is a good site called Lissaexplains.com written by a kid who at 12 or something wrote her own HTML and made a site which almost bankrupted her until she learned about advertising etc. She tells some good stuff there and has grown up to be 20 or so and at Uni now.

Al, I've noticed you now have another problem. If I go to your web address, your home page no longer appears. I just get a directory listing of the files on the server.

I think the reason is that you have saved the homepage as "Index.html" (with a capital I). Be aware that addresses on the internet are case-sensitive and the convention is to use all lower-case unless you specifically intend a word or url to have capitalisation. I think your host server is not serving up your home page by default because it expects the default page to be named "index.html" (all lower case).

It is very easy to make such a mistake. When you are working on drafting up a web site and have the files on your local machine, they are not case-sensitive but as soon as you load them up to a web server on the internet, they are.

The same applies to all your other page names and inter-page links. You either need to change all the names and links to lower case or ensure that the capitalisation of them is 100% consistent. I find it easiest to use lower case throughout to remove all doubt.
