Once saw a program on TV about the self sufficient house. From memory the orientation of the house - north facing windows (not exactly north), and using the septic tanks to produce gas for the stove, solar heating to name a few. This bloke had it all set up nicely. His only problem was encroaching suburbia. Seems no matter where you start (with exception of the back o' burke), soon everyone is around.
