I also know that road - my dad was the CO at 7sig for a while.
Car repairs are crazy. I was involved in a tiny (read miniscule rear ender once - my fault though :o I thought, incorrectly, that the driver in front would go into the HUGE gap in traffic). Cost was outrageous. I thought I would simply sort it out myself and avoid all the insurance problems. No such luck. Not even close.
Glad you are OK. I can imagine it would be the worst feeling in the world watching that through your rear-view mirror with the kids and wife in the car.
At least in NSW they hvae compulsory greenslips as part of your rego. That means that you are covered in case of an accident. Not much help for your car or his car!
