Actually we're not.
In 1926, the British government agreed the Balfour Declaration – that Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa were completely independent countries and the 1931 Statute of Westminster confirmed their full legislative independence.
Further in 1953 the Commonwealth of Australia passed complementary legislation.
