ferrets work great on rats but they can't get into mouse holes.
Best idea is to alternate between traps and baits. So by the time they start to wakeup something no good for them they are gone.
I use the wax block baits as they are less likely to be eaten by birds.
If I lay baits outside I tie them in the middle of a bit of plastic downpipe to keep them away from the birds and dogs etc.
When the mooses invaded our little castle, MBGitW sent me to fix all the holes. What a fun job, crawling under the 'ouse with gap seal and chickenwire. She got these no mess traps, a little spread of KRAFT Peanut Butter(picky mooses), and 5 min later SNAP! "Pat go and get rid of it!" was the cry. Within a week of traps and patching holes, no more moose on the loose! :D

I can't keep a cat up here in the rainforest, the native white tailed rats are so big they chase the cats. After one day the cat has packed his bags and shoot through. :(

You are thinking about it all the wrong way.
I have a couple of pet snakes and I feed them mice. Pet shops sell frozen pinkies for $1.50 each! Fuzzies are more expensive.
When you catch them, wack them in the freezer for a month (to kill the worms and other parasites) and then sell them to the pet shops. Flea won't mind if you promise to buy her something with the proceeds.
In no time your new shed will be up and full of heaps of good toys from your profits.
Anyway, didn't you buy a CAT recently - you posted photos of it? Don't tell me it isn't pulling it's weight! :(

Just got back from taking the Flea out for Birthday dinner and my cunning plan has failed Baldrick. I put out 2 traditional type finger buster traps with peanut paste and two of the plastic springloaded jobbies with Jam...Zilch Speedie Mooses:( The shotgun is looking good.
The ring leader has the happy knack of setting off the plastic traps without getting snapped. I think he has gone and told all the other meeces to stay away from them...dammed rodents...sufferin suckertash.:o

A bit late but I find the best bait on a trap is a nice fresh pumpkin seed. They love them and are very difficult for them to get them off without setting the trap off. Another one is choclate.
Bit of flywire wired to the trap, with peanut butter wiped on/in it.
Supposed to be the goods.
