From Wikepaedia:
"The Fifth Amendment protects witnesses from being forced to incriminate themselves. To "plead the Fifth" is to refuse to answer a question because the response could provide self-incriminating evidence of an illegal act punishable by fines, penalties or forfeiture."
I like the alchoholic analogy; Much more interesting and is more closely aligned to Woodwould's story':).
The difference in american and imperial gallons is probably why we ended up with 44gal drums. I suspect in america they are 50gals.

Drums here are typically 55 gallons and 25 gallons. Good luck trying to figure that one out.:?:?
The fifth of whiskey is history. Booze has been metric here for several years. The fifth is still convenient in conversation, though; e.g. "For a safe and sane fourth of July, don't buy a fifth on the third." And old hot-rodders will remember, "I've got four on the floor, and a fifth under the seat."
Cheers,
Joe
