"The White Swan was originally brought to Western Australia by early British colonists. The birds were reportedly brought to Northam at the turn of the century. They soon found the local river, with its small islands and banks thickly covered in vegetation, an ideal breeding ground and quickly adopted Northam as their home. Nowhere else in Western Australia has the White Swan found a natural breeding ground. The swans are protected and cared for by local volunteer swan wardens, who have built up special relationships with the birds. They are fed each morning at 0630 on Broome Terrace next to Newcastle Street Bridge. The White Swans of Northam have been declared a protected species."Quote:
