Following on from the discussion about Simon's bookshelf project I have replied in his thread and hope it may give some ideas.

The biggest issue I see is nothing to do with the engineering issues but seeking approval from the aesthetic police and I have to say I do know just how difficult that can be.

PS the AU/UK/US thought came about as I have three forums open on my ipad to read, one from each country and some of the differences in equipment and attitudes is vast. Some of it is clearly driven by the size of the space.

This is for Paul and anyone else who wants to do the occasional small to medium forging or heat treating.

Youtuber is Neil Paskin - PaskMakes.

A possible modification to Neil's design is to cut a hole in the bottom of the can and make the hole go right through, and put the torch nozzle centrally in the tunnel. This allows you to put longer objects in or put a rod right through to heat the centre to bend it etc. Both ends open will also allow more oxygen in for a cleaner burn. Google "coffee can forge" for similar videos.

You can make these things out of scrap for next to nothing.

This is one of about five videos my son (also Simon) has made while locked down in Norway. They include brewing beer from glacial ice, building an ice cave (called a quinzee) in -30°C temperatures and building a mobile sauna on a double axle trailer, but this link is for building a pizza oven using scrap metal salvaged from a shipwreck:

Despite having far to many projects on the boil i got sidetracked on Sunday and made one of the jar holders i was talking about in the prattle.... this one is made from reclaimed pallet wood and just glued together, i went to take a better photo just now and it's disappeared already. I will admit i already had the bottom panel glued up.

I will be out tomorrow - medical appointment. Everyone have a good meeting.

I will be out but will see if I am able to listen in from the car whilst I travel.

I mentioned on the Prattle some criteria for what constitutes a favourite timber. It can be because that is what you have, I could be because you have acquired it cheaply or at no cost at all. It could be because you like the look of it and it could even be a combination of all these things.

I said I liked Radiata Pine, but only because I have a lot of it for free or close to other than picking it up from a rubbish dump.

Some short stuff that looks like this

I usually keep an eye on what is being offered by the local auction house at their general auction conducted every Friday.

I had my eye set on a deWalt 735x thicknesser in quite good nick. I checked the serial number and consulted Prof Google who advised that the first 4 digits correspond to the year of manufacture: 2004. The heads of a few bolts/screws and the infeed table were very slightly pitted, all was clean under the top cover and I didn't feel any nicks on the blades. All fairly basic I know but all indicating that it had not been flogged over time.
I decided to attend the auction and set my limit at $350-$400. I must be a poor judge of value/demand because the bidding opened at $500:)( and reached the final bid of $800 in no time. Add the buyer's premium and it sold for $930 !!!

So I missed on a thicknesser AND I missed the prattle. Must be a moral in all this!!!

Se ya all next Friday...unless of course I am side-tracked once again by an elusive auction lot !!
