Steps to finishing the stain on my windows.

I hope this is the correct place to post this thread.

My problem is my painter has let me down re: finishing the prep work to my 3 window frames, and 4 french door frames. He has done a 'sand and seal' coat', but that's it! What is the next step as it looks like I am going to have to do it myself! The outside to the french doors I will be using a Marine grade clear varnish. I just need the steps to do it properly. Not a happy camper over this. It shouldn't be too hard, is it!???
