ledgers around a pool

G'DAY ALL
i need a bit of advice. Just had an inground pool put in and im putting a deck around it.
Can i bolt a timber ledger around the pool' Im going to use merbau for the top and im having them flush with the top of the copers. As the copers hang over the edge do i need to notch the ledger to the right height or is there another way. Or do i need to run stumps and joist along the edge to get the right height
