Should I have the roof sealed and painted?

Last night I had to go into my roof space to fix up downlight. Seeing as it had been raining all day, I noticed that my concrete roof tiles (about 25-30 years old) have become totally porous and that all the tiles were wet underneath and certainly potential there for dripping onto the ceiling.

This has prompted me to look at getting it sealed and painted. (As well as getting the pointing fixed up as it needs it).

Does anyone have any good reasons not to have this done? I have heard people here complain about paint peeling after a while, but at the same time I know people who had it done 10 years ago and its still looking new. I will go through a reputable company to ensure it is done properly.

Out of interest sake, is there another (cheaper) alternative to fixing my porous roof?

Any advice appreciated.
