Renovate an old Deck

I am hoping to renovate and old painted hardwood deck. I thought I could sand it back then apply some type of stain or oil. Some questions: how difficult is it to sand off old paint on the deck? What kind of equipment should I use? Is the sanded finish likely to be good enough for a stain or oil. Do I need to punch in all the nails?
Any advice would be appeciated. Cheers!
