Painting red bricks - any info appreciated!

I'm thinking of painting the outside of my ground floor home unit, but if it's going to need very regular re painting it might not be the best idea. Could anyone recommend some tips for how to best:
Prepare the bricks
Undercoat?
Roller or brush?
Type of paint / brand
How many coats
How long to wait in between coats
How long will it last (front does get a lot of sun)
