Butt joint taping on a unlevel join

I have just put up 6 metres of gyprock for wall I made in the Garage problem is one of the butt joins is alot out about 2-4mm how do i go about taping this with paper tape do I level it out with basecoat first let that dry then run tape over it or can you tape on a unlevel butt join.

also is Basecoat 45 ok as I was going to get some tomorrow
