my new bath has a smaller trap size?

I am just about to install my new dorf enamel bath and the old drain trap pipe is 50mm but the plug bit is bigger than that (could it be an imperial size)
the plug hole drain won't fit in the new bath as the hole is only 50mm. Has the standard drain been reduced in size or have I bought the wrong bath?
I will have to change the pipe and trap to 40mm but is this big enough to drain if I want to have an above the bath shower?
