From what I've been hearing in advertising, yes.
They were in talks to buy out Mitre 10, but that fell though so they decided to down their own path.
Chris, if that's the case they must have a massive building program on the go! 7000 jobs by June, wow!:o
I don't know any details, but it'll be interesting to see what, where and how.
Sounds like a bit of corporate spin to me. Safeway in Victoria is renaming to Woolies. Technically they were not on the Woolies books earlier, so this is where the majority are most likely coming from.

Don't know how many staff it takes to run a big box store, but 7000 would be more than a couple of stores.
Maybe they can take over the Crazy Clark leases.:D:D
Greg, as far as I know Safeway has always been "on the books" of Woolworth, as have their other brands ie Dick Smith, Big W, Tandy etc.Quote:

Considering all the Woolies stores in the UK closed 17000 staff retrenched they may have some of them coming to fill the positions.:doh:

You'd be right then. I was hazarding a guess based on the numbers. 7000 is a huge amount of staff and seemed to me to be close to what I imagine Safeway employs in Victoria. I have no "facts" or inside knowledge to support this assumptionQuote:

...and the story in today's paper says they employ 200,000 already. So another 7,000 is just a drop in the bucket really. Doesn't even mean they need to open any more stores (although they likely will).
Don't forget that under our wonderful Federal Govt., full time employment is something under 10 hours per week, so a job packing shelves a couple of nights is a full time job. This practice was started under Little Johnny and hasn' t been altered by the present mugs as it would make them look bad.
You can also 'create' 'new' jobs by getting rid of one 38 hour a week employee and replacing them with 3 10-hour 'full time' employees.
Of course we can always hope that Woolies will buy GMC/Triton as the house brand for a new competitor to Bunnings.
