Roof Wall Plate Size Does it Matter?

I'm fixing up a small room's roof with one external brick wall. When I dismatled the internal celing there was a gutter ruuning through the middle (guess why the room leaked) ....Now what I have is rafters that end about 400mm from the extrnal brick wall so I was going to extend them...

It looks like the room was extened but....errrrr I cant even explain how the whole roof was put togther you wouldnt believe me anyway...

What I want to know is what should I use to join two rafters?..Is it ok to join two rafters to make them longer? .Plus what height wall plate should I use?
