Decking over existing brick and paving verandah

Hi everyone, I am a newbie and need some advice please. I have a pergola over a brick and paving verandah and I would like to put a new deck in and replace the rotting pergola. Do I need to remove the brick verhandah or can I place the decking material over the top? Thanks, Samantha.
