WOODWORKING QUIZ for 5/3/04

Good Morning Mates,
By my figuring it should be around 4:30 or 5:30 in the morning on the third of May in the land of OZ, while here it is 3:11 PM on the 2nd. Hope I got my time zones correct as you are not on fast time where we are. I am rating the time zone for the Lord Howe Island area.

Now for todays quiz; What does the term "blending" mean in woodworking circles?

blending is the ability to quaff similar amounts of beer as your co-workers without embarassing youself socially.:D

Blending: Wearing a flanelette shirt and a false beard to the Working With Wood show so that you 'blend in' with everyone else. :D

I tried to find the answer by stuffing a chunk of old Jarrah fence post into the blender in the kitchen.

I still don't know what it means.

Anyone know where I can get a new blender at the right price?

A common misconception often attributed, but by no means restricted to American woodworking quiz compilers, that assumes the rest of the world uses the same date format as the US. Numerals are often "blended" incorrectly for the local region.

It is 9:47 PM 5/2/04 here and by my calculations it should be 12:17 PM in OZ.

I am going to post the quiz answer as follows;

Blending; Color change that is detectable at a distance of 1.8m or 2.4m but does not detract from the overall appearance of the panel.

Now since I am not sure of the time difference and the lack of carpentry or woodworking interest in the quizzes, this one is the last. No offense but your lack of interest and the off color responses are not setting to my desire to try to teach woodworking, it is not worth my time to even try.

Aww, now come on Ralph, we're just having a bit of fun. You were warned about the Aussie sense of humour ;)

You'll notice that, like the States, we have different time zones here. Many of the members are in Western Australia and South Australia and these guys are on different times to those of us on the East Coast. There's also some Kiwis (New Zealanders) around but don't worry too much about them :D

I really don't see how asking a few vague, unfocused, questions about some obscure woodworking terms that are often indigenous to the U.S. of A. is going to help us much anyway.

Macc. Don't you have any brains at all? The clue lay in the word 'blending' ie to mix more than one of something with another. Go back and try a chunk of jarrah with a lump of maple and maybe a few gum leaves and see what you get.

Mind you, he was really trying in that last bit. Did you notice that he put 1.8metres and 2.4 metres instead of 6 to 8 feet? Ah well at least our costs will go down if we don't have to support him any more. :)

That wasn't Bob, it was me.

Try Sydney for the date/time on the east coast. The rest of 'em are used to making the adjustment - including those Queenslanders, who don't use daylight saving time (or fast time as you call it) because it upsets the cows or the chickens or something....

Since you want to teach us some terms from USA, I propose that we teach you a few from over here, for instance : "sledging" or perhaps "taking the " even "****-stirring". All of these terms are common usage in Australia, and more noticably on this BB/forum. We are all after all "bastards" who sneak past our very good friends the moderators manually moderated profanity filters by a "poofteenth of an inch" or a "bee's dick". We dont really want you to stop your little quizzes as we can all learn from them and it beats the hell out of doing "sweet FA". Its just that if we dont know your answer we are just as likely to cover up our own inability by some diatribe or another. Look at some of the best examples of this all over the board (Rollcall comin') Doorstop (RIP), Journeyman Mick, Silent-C (who is far from silent), His emminence Sir Stinkalot, even myself etc.....

Don't be offended, get even - I reckon most of us have evil smirks on our faces as we type. I know I do. See you at the wood working show In Sydney.

Lord Howe Island-that's about as far away as you can get from mainland Australia and still be in Australia. Famous for its pine trees, endangered birds and now, apparently as the Greenwich (as in Greenwich Mean Time) of Australia. Personally Ralph, I find that although I've been in the trade for a few years now, trained a few dozen apprentices and even did a teaching degree I never set out to "teach". Teaching is not one way traffic, go into it with your eyes and ears open and you'll be suprised at what you take away from it. Did anyone here ask for lessons in American terminology? Some people were interested in a quiz though, and most chose to respond in a humourous fashion. Personally I enjoy the lateral answers. Getting a lecture about stuff that I've learnt and mostly forgotten is not my idea of entertainment. I have a few reference books handy if I want to refresh my memory on terms such as "astragal", "jib door" or "cauls". Keep the questions coming, I say, just be prepared for Aussie answers.:D :D

Hey SilentC, the reason we don't like the extra daylight is that it fades the curtains so fast. Also, once the cows are used to coming in to be milked at say 4pm it is very difficult to get them to change and suddenly start coming in at 3pm instead.

We're not stupid up here you know, we do have valid reasons for most of the things we do

Nah, you just do what the farmers down here do in summertime - sleep in... ;)
