whats up from Texas

Hi everyone, I am from the beautiful city of Austin, Texas and now live in Waco with my dear bride, my 2.5 year old son, and my Italian Greyhound dog. I found this website the other day and am very impressed with everyones knowledge and skill level. I hope to catch up someday down the road.

I am somewhat new to woodworking and am eager to learn from everyone here. I have built a few things over the years and have found myself wanting to do this stuff more and more with each project I take on. Anyway, I just wanted to say hi.

Texas we have a few members from that state...........rumour is GWB is thinking about joining when he retires.

Then again Aussie are renown for tall tales:roll:

A couple of other Texas boys are running around here too.
That will be a lot of fun, don't write in your dialect, but in proper English, just like I try to do all the time. Oh boy it's so hard to translate my Dutch thoughts all the time into English.
If you have to show us something, don't hesitate, as we all love pictures.

Did a tour of Europe a thousand years ago. Two of the tour group were bank tellers from Austin. (the Texas Twins) I wonder if they still work there?

I was stationed at Fort Hood, not too far from Waco, many years ago. Some beautiful territory in your area.

Welcome to US ( that is us and not USA). Forgive Ad, he's a real good bloke but because he is Dutch he works at speaking English "Proper Like" and he is good at it. We speak a form of English here that does vary from Pom speak (I should know, I was once a Pom) but we can translate Seppo speak. So say it like it is. We've had to listen to George for a few years now so we have some experience of Texan.:U

In response to ad's and artme's comments, when your from Texas you don't realize that we have our own language. It varies alot depending on how redneck or how drunk you are but I will try to use proper english and drop in a few Texas things every now and again just to keep everyone guessing.

Joe, you would not recognize Fort Hood anymore. It has grown like crazy in the last few years. I checked out G-Dubs link and I think it is a fake but you never know. Funny none the less.

I have 2 rustic beer coolers, a rustic trash can and a fishing pole holder to build this weekend for Christmas gifts. I will post pics when I complete them. I am going to experiment in box making here in the next few weeks. I also have a ton of green Texas Mesquite that I am going to cut up and experiment with. Not sure what I am going to build out of it yet though.

Mesqite has interesting grain and I've seen some nice pens made from it.

In Australia it is a pest and is usedas firewood

There's 2 suggestions for you.

Mesquite is a junk tree here in texas too, but it is everywhere, so the price is usually free if you want it. Most people here use it for firewood or to BBQ with it. I met a guy today that is an avid pen maker, he had a few mesquite and pecan wood pens that looked pretty cool. I am kind of excited about sawing mesquite up and making something out of it. I think it is good for me to start sawing up myself into lumber since if I screw up it doesn't really matter since it is free. I would hate to saw up some Oak or Maple and ruin it.
