Help with basic questions re skirting pls

OK, complete novice here. I have successfully removed skirting in our bedroom and put up MDF wallboards to dado height. I have to now replace skirting and due to removing a fireplace, adding a doorway where there wasn't one and future installation of a built-in wardrobe, I am re-using the original skirtings that came with the house and have to piece them together.
