Deck fastners

Been looking over this sire for a couple of days now, and it looks like a great place to find all the answers a DIY decking novice needs.

I am planning a ground level deck path upto my front door, and am thinking of 140 x 25 merbau on TP bearers. Is there a better hardwood for the job? (I am in Cairns so it will get wet, have full sun and humidity).

I was going to use gold battern screws as the fixing method, but have seen some references to decking fastners on this site. Has anyone got any experience with them, which is the best system?
