Painting Colonial Windows

Hi all,

My house has many Colonial type windows, you know the ones with up to 9 sheets of glass to each sash, and are in desperate need of painting,

My question is can I paint over the edges of the timber beads onto the glass and then use a scraper to clean up afterwards?
