Finishing silky oak table
Hi all. Just joined yesterday. I've played around with old furniture for years using mainly Wattyl stains and fillers and polyurethane finishes (best whilst the kids were growing up)!
I have been fascinated by the great variety of finishing products that are mentioned on this site.
My daughter has asked me to strip and refinish a very solid 1.7m X 3.6m, 5 large turned legs, silky oak boardroom/farmhouse table. I have almost finished the stripping and am now over-awed by the size of the table top! It will show up any amateurish flaws that I am good at!
Any finishing suggestions for this table? I think the grain will need to be filled. I would like to keep the natural colour of the timber and have a tough surface. Also is sanding sealer necessary, and if so at what point is it used in the process?
Any advice will be appreciated.
