A simple build for an upcoming wedding.
The project so far....
Plans: Raf Nathan, AWR 55
Joinery: Dowel, using Stanely 59, recommended on forums, bought off ebay
Wood: Solid jarrah, red gum frame for top and bottom panel, from Boutique Timbers
Glue: tightbond 2, arildite structural epoxy & Dubin black shoe polish
Metalwork: brass, bought at bunnings

The Finishing Plan...
Sanding:
Makita ROS sanded to 240grit prior to gluing. Plan is to sand to 600grit, the highest bunnines stocks.
I orderd from the Sand Paper Man, http://www.activeabrasives.com.au/, recommended else where in forums, 600,800,1200, and then in the micro mesh 1500, 1800, 2400, 3200 (eq to 2000.) I usually finish at 320 grit, I'm sure I read somewhere on the Ubeut site to go as close to 2000 as possible.
Sealer:
Everyone I spoke to, esp. Wendy, said that the Ubeat Shellac Sanding Sealer was the way to go. Next recommended was Feast Watson Proofseal.
Carbatec wanted to charge me $18 extra because it's "flammable" and "dangerous" so I got the flakes. I'm a little worried about colour change, but it's so thin, shouldn't matter.
Recipe is... "3 to 4 lb per gallon of methylated spirits" http://www.ubeaut.com.au/flakes.html which is roughly 1.5kg per 4L which is roughly 200g per 250ml metho to make shellac. Or to make the sanding sealer... 5 parts meth again http://www.ubeaut.com.au/dewaxed.html and we end up with.... 40g of flakes in 250ml of metho... sealer. Anyone, esp. Neil, is welcome to correct my maths.
Protective Coat:
I wanted Minwax wipe on poly satin. You deep down we all want to be like norm abram... http://www.newyankee.com/index.php. I know there's been some supply issues. Port Mac bunnings has about 12 cans of the gloss, and no satin :o.
I don't want a real glassy look. Going to nice family antique style crisp satin. What do people thing? I have some Feast watson satin proof, not wipe on, not water based.... hmmm.
Finish:
Ubeat Trad Wax is in the post today from carbatec.

Chest all finished. I'm sure they'll be very happy with it when they return from honeymoon.
Used satinproof in the end. Very durable. But not a very nice finish.
