spray guns

Actually, basic question about spraying...

I have a little compressor - 40litre 2.5hp direct drive - which does fine for brads (and pretty good for janet's as well :D). We're also going to be doing some house painting - indoor only, 4-5 rooms. There's also a 7m catamaran to re-paint using, probably, waterbased polyurethane. And there's always finishing on woodwork!

So far, on all the basic things I've made, finishing has been basic as well and I haven't needed to spray. When I do, I won't have a spray booth or anything and want to minimise harm (environment and my lungs) as much as possible. I can't really see myself using it terribly often, so big outlay isn't an option - I'd like to keep it under $500 :oo:.

From reading around, the options seem to be to

• buy a HVLP spray gun for the existing compressor, knowing that it's really too small to handle more than tiny objects. Which gun, what tips, etc. would be TBD
• buy a larger compressor, then a gun :rolleyes: - problem with $$$?
• buy a basic turbine HVLP system (like a Wagner)
• buy a basic airless system (Wagner have them but there's lots to choose from too)

Could anyone provide direction and comment to assist?

I think the reason you are not getting any answers is that if you search properly you will find that none of the processes you intend to do


*paint house inside
*paint catamaran with water based poly
*or general woodwork

are suitable to spray paint

each of the options has a far better solution than using a spray gun of any type without much in the way of cost for equipment.

Ok - thanks for the comments. I can see the first applying - mostly inside painting does seem to be better done with roller and some brush work. For the second, I know boats get painted with water-based poly and spray. Indeed, the boat I'm re-painting was originally done that way in someones shed (pity I don't know any more than that). Also, I've read enough articles on spraying in the woodwork setting that to make a blanket statement that there are far better solutions seems a bit harsh. Perhaps the answer, then, is that there is no solution to the trio (or duo) I've presented. Or I've asked the wrong question. Or I've asked it in the wrong place. Or everyone's out there finishing and not typing :2tsup:.

Buy a star 770 spraygun and play with it, your compressor will handle it.

I bought a low pressure gun from one of those very cheap auto stores (not sure if I'm allowed to mention names) for less than $50, I used it to spray the kitchen benches I made in two pack ( did them in the car port - hardly a spray booth). They came up well. I've just been using them in the shed to do a small table too.
Not sure about water based finishes on a boat tho, it kind of sounds a bit slouble to me! I think I'd go with oil based.

Thanks Mick. Good ideas. The star 770 isn't HVLP (from what I could find?). A cheapy HVLP gun to try things out wouldn't be too bad perhaps...
