Bathroom/laundry floor tiling process?

Hi all,

I have searched the different threads in this area, but found a couple of conflicting pieces of advice and am a little confused.:doh:

So please forgive me for asking a repetitive question.


We plan to rip up the floor tiles in the laundry and bathroom, which from what I understand the toilet needs to go too (unable to save?? RIP??).

The bathroom walls are completely tiled, and will remain as I think we can work around that (current tile colours not to my liking, but quality of previous works = budget restraints to gut completely).

No changes to the positions of the toilet, vanity and laundry basin.

My question is, when the re-screed is completed, are these items installed prior to tiling or after?:?

Madrat, if you are meaning the toilet, vanity etc, I would tile first, then place the items back, it is a lot easier to place a toilet over tiles than cutting tiles around the base etc. not only does it look better, but better for water proofing etc.

I think you could be heading for lots of drama and swearing if you rip up the existing tiles - unless they are falling off leave them and tile straight over. You might be able to save the old loo also.

Some of the perils that may await you if you lift the existing tiles are

1) the waterproof membrane may get damaged requiring reapplication

2) the new scree / ramping may need complete removal of the existing tile glue and old scree / ramping

3) If a floor waste is installed it may be glued to the existing tiles and may get damaged

4) the bottom row of wall tiles might get trashed

Hi Doogie,
Unfortunately, when the rest of the tiles throughout the house were ripped up (100sqm of the bl**dy things), the lead-in edges to both laundry and bathroom were significantly damaged on the first row, otherwise tiling over would definitely be my first choice.
We are definitely going to encounter all 4 of your points listed above, but unsure of another way to go about it.
We could replace the leading edge tiles only and then re-tile over?? Is that possible or too dodgy?
The laundry too, by the way has a hole in the middle floor tile from when my hubby went all rambo on me thinking it was going to be an easy 'removal' :oo:.
Any advice is appreciated before we go any further.
