Nail length and finish
Hi All
Apologies if this is in the wrong spot... I'm new here
I am about to start framing our extension, the tables require 90x45 wall frame members, the timber framing code is a bit vague in regards to nails, I can either use the standard 75mm or go up to 90mm that are a bit more expensive. Also if I go for H2 will this mandate the use of galv nails?
Thanks!

Hi
I've come accross a document from one of the timber companies that says bright nails are fine for H2 and LOSP. My only issue now is 75mm or 90mm for 45mm framing, I'm leaning toward 90 but they are a lot more expensive

bright nails are fine, 75mm nails are OK if you use 35mm top and bottom plates. 2 nails per stud.

As Pulse said.
It's interesting that the 'nominal' fixing of plates to studs is 2/75mm nails for 35m plates & 2/90mm nails for 45mm plates. [through the plate - not if skew nailing]
Nail gun fixing aside how many chippies use 90mm nails & how many inspectors check.

I know 75mm is allowable but I always use 90mm as they grip far better.
They are dearer but in the overall cost of things it really equates to a trifling amount
-
I only ever use 75mm, because they're only nominal fixings and the 12mm or 16mm threaded rod running from roof batten to bearer @ 1200 crs or less will pull it all together anyway (cyclonic area).

Hi Guys
Thanks for all the replies, I will go 90 I think, are they more prone to splitting? Or do you have to be a bit more accurate? My top and bottom plates are 90x45.
