Mum Ignored Baby's Broken Bones

Yet another shocking story of some poor child in this country left in terrible pain for weeks. Why aren't the mothers sterilised when it is obvious they are useless (a danger to the child) as a parent? Fortunately as far as I know it is not an everyday occurance.

A YOUNG mother ignored her baby's broken arms and legs and serious chest injuries for three weeks before seeking medical help, a court has been told. The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has denied causing the appalling injuries to her nine-month-old daughter.

But she has pleaded guilty in the Brisbane District Court to one count of cruelty to a child under 16 by failing to provide medical help. The court was told the woman, who was 18 at the time, had been living with her de facto partner at a caravan park in Brisbane's west in 2003 when the injuries occurred.

Details of the injuries were not read out in court, but court documents reveal they included seven fractured ribs discovered by hospital staff who eventually examined her in August 2003. Her right leg was broken in three places, and her right arm in two places. The other two limbs were also broken, and she had a severe chest injury that caused fluid to leak into her lungs.

She could not be fed orally during her stay at the Mater Hospital Paediatric Intensive Care Unit. The Crown rejected submissions from the mother that she sought earlier medical help for her daughter, but was turned away from a hospital. The court was told the child is now the subject of a protection order until she is 18 years old. The woman's two other children were also in care. Judge Fleur Kingham adjourned sentencing the woman who is now five months pregnant with her fourth child until a later date. Judge Kingham has requested further information from the Department of Child Safety.

If the girl is 18 and has four kids, how old was she when she had the first.
Who is the "partner" and how old is he.

What has this mother been through to have so many children where are her parents should they not suffer the same fate for neglecting her.

Does this child have a calcium producing inefficiency problem which can cause bones to break just turning over or a parent picking a child up? It is a medical known problem this can happen to adults also.

How often have we heard of hospitals all over the country turning people away and finding out later they have made grave mistakes causing deaths due to lack of investigation another over up.

I have just been through hospital shyte with my 29 yr old daughter they were going to send her home if it wasn't for a fisty little Asian Dr who fought with the senior surgeon over the phone she would not have been admitted. After 8 days they found medications given to her in emergency had made her worse obviously alergic, no formal correct diagnosis was made or still has been. She is still in agony at times the local GP sent her for further scans which show herniated L4 & L5 S1 disks. Now she had scans X-rays all sorts of tests in hospital and they missed this why.??

So don't blame the mother totally. :no:

I was sorry to hear of your daughter's situation I can see why you would be very angry. From my own experiences I would always seek a second opinion as an uncle and my wife had cancer tumours in them and they had not been picked up by the original consultant. Unfortunately my uncle past away 5 years ago within 3 months of the detection of the tumour. By very good fortune my wife's tumour was found after having a bad fall in a underground car park. This resulted in her going to her local GP who said the stomach pain was due to the fall but that evening whilst at home she said the pain was getting worse. So I took her to the emergency department at the local hospital and after speding 5 days in the emergency department, she was told that she had a tumour. The operation was a success and she has been in remission for 2 years now:). It was only 3 months before that fall she had tests done in the locality of the tumour but nothing was picked up:doh:.

You was very fortunate to find someone who was prepared to stand up to the surgeon(s) and state his views. From my experience of working in hospitals I have met very few people who go out on a limb and speak up against a higher authority. After my last hospital job I found out why most people are scared because my unit manager gave my future employer a "character assassination" reference which lost me the job. I was told she was a bitch during my short stint there (4 months) but given I didn't have much contact with her & when I did it appeared all was going well that I thought a good reference would be OK. Just shows you can't always get it right when judging other people.

All the best for your daughter condition, luckily it sounds as though she is in good hands with you around.
