G`day guys
Reading another bulletin board recently I noticed someone saying that he used de-waxed shellac as a sanding sealer. Does anyone have an opinion onn this.The reason I`m asking is that I`m doing some Banksia nut slices for coaster etc with the "fuzz" still on the outside and unless you use a sealer it absolutly drinks the polyu varnish until you get enough coats on.The finish of the polyu over standard sealer is not real flash either.

It works a treat, but don't use it neat, dilute it with 4-5 parts industrial metho or better still buy some of our sanding sealer from Timbercon it is a Dewaxed White Shellac based product and costs around $6.60 for a bottle. A lot cheaper than the shellac.
By the way, it is a traditional sanding sealer and not a grain filler like the modern sanding sealers.

I have no first hand experience of shelac as a sanding sealer although many seem to wax lirical about its wonder.
I have used sanding sealer designed for use under polyeurathane and have had good sucess and no compatability problems with the intended top cote.
It fills & seals well and sands more freely than its top cote
