Hi I'm building a pool deck the posts and bearers are done I'm about to do the joists i had planned to use 90 x 45 but i would like to go higher, could i use a 140 x 45 or would this be too high for a joist.... thanks paul

140x45 is fine. If you went up to 180x45 you would need to block the joists.

90 x45 single span 1100mm continuos 1300mm
140 x 45 single span 2300mm continuos 2800mm
continuous is over 3 or more bearers single is over only 2 supports

What he's asking is whether he can increase the height of the joists from 90 to 140. The rule is that if the joist is 4 times the width or more, then the joists must be blocked (braced).
