Location Location

Hi,

I am seeking some advice on what I should do?

I have just purchased another wardrobe (to put my tools in) for the garage. However, as you can see from the images attached that I have a GPO presently in the way.

Can I relocate it on the top wooden batton? If so, I will have to extend the existing wiring to there. If so how would you suggest I should do it?

Or do you think I should just buy a junction box and relocate the presently joined wires within it?

Firstly, I suppose guaranteed the wardrobe will cover the power outlet?

Secondly, there's no way the wires would stretch to the top baton - as you said.

So the third and last option that I can see (not being qualified to in this area) is to get the electrician in to move it safely for you.

Or you could leave it where it is and cut a hole in the back of the cupboard. Any chance you want to keep your cordless tools in the cupboard with their chargers?

Thanks Wendy & Dan about the idea of cutting out an hole in the back of the cupboard but I have enough other GPO's within the garage. The idea of charging the batteries hadn't crossed my mind but it's present location would interfer with the shelving inside the wardrobe plus I wouldn't like the thought of leaving a charger operating within a locked wardrobe. I've had one house fire previously - I don't want another one.

Build some shelves cubelock is good or go to your local motorcycle shop and get some of the steel frames that are around imported bikes , they usually throw them out , and make some out of that , bonus is their easy to transport when next you move.:2tsup:

You won't be able to use the original box against the tin, the mounting surface must be non-conductive

If the wardrobe will ultimately be covering the GPO, why not mount the GPO under the timber? You don't plan on using it, you just need to get it out of the way? Why does it have to be above? Or am I missing something? If you do it that way, you won't have to extend the wires or even undo the connections to the GPO - negating the need to get an electrician.

As noted above, don't mount the block directly to the tin, fix a piece of ply or other non conductive material to mount to. If it makes it easier, pick up a low-profile mounting block to give yourself more room. Alternatively (and probably easier) get an enclosed mounting block and fix it to the timber, which will provide the necessary insulation between the GPO and the tin.

I'd imagine that the sparky would just put a narrow junction box on the underside of the batten. But I'm not a sparky, so you'll have to wait and see.

Yes, a sparky would use a J-Box in order to extend the circuit.
