noise from roof wood frames

How common is roof noise ( ie, roof cracking, roof popping, roof creaking etc.) in old homes with wood roof frames?

Any tips for common inspection procedures to see possible causes?

I am assuming that since we are getting a dryer environment, wood shrinkage will be accelerated in timber roof frames? Is this the case and what can one do to combat this?

Have you got a tin roof?

Lived in timber houses with tin roofs allmy life.

How common are noises in the roof - very - they creak and groan:o

Nothing to worry about, unless its a flapping type noise when there is a bit of wind about

Metal decked roofs always make noise. Not much you can do about it. The noises are usually due to wind pressure moving the sheets which cause the metal connectors and sheets to create the noise.

Hygrip roofing screws, that is the ones with a screw thread just below the head, have helped this a lot as they engage the sheet material and draw it up towards the head to compress the seal and hold it firm.

But even with them, you still get movement from expansion and contraction with sheet temperature variation, also many times the fixings are not 100% firm at the cappings & flashings as this distorts them a little out of shape and they don't look so pretty, so you are likely to get noises from there.
