Spotted Gum floor boards over chipboard

Hi People,
We are about to begin the process of laying floor boards over the existing chipboard. The area to be covered is approx 76M2.
We are looking at using 19mm spotted gum - not sure what width yet.

What I was thinking of doing is firstly thoroughly sanding and if required re-nailing the chipboard to give me a good base. Then I was thinking of using stainless steel helical nails to secure the spotted gum boards. I don't mind leaving the stainless nail heads visible.

Any thoughts/pitfalls would be appreciated.

G'day. By all means go ahead and level sand and re-nail, if necessary, the chipboard prior to laying the Spotted Gum. Every bit of good preparation helps with the final result.

Not too crazy about your nail idea but.

The nails will need to be punched prior to the sanding being done, so what you'll be left with, is rows of holes with shiny dots in them. Not a good look.

Plus, the only thing vistors will notice is the fact that the holes haven't been filled, which will detract away from the awesome timber the Spotted Gum is, when done right.

Best bet. Glue and secret nail.

I was concerned I wouldn't get the sort of fixing I want by secret nailing into chipboard. And I was/am a bit worried about the glueing option.

Sanding the chipboard will assist in a secure adhesion. There are a couple of good glues, The most common one is Bostik Ultra set in a 600ml sausage. You will have to buy a chaulking gun to fit that size. Bunnings is the go for you on both the items. Or go to a floorsanding supplier and you may be able to get it all a little cheaper. Sika t55 is also a good one, and sellys put out a product. 70m2 . you will need about 20 or so tubes . that should cost you Between $160 and $200 Depending where you go to buy it. The chalking gun will cost you about $50 - $80

Secret nailing with Glue is an everyday install. Everyone does it.
Yes, Level sand and re-nail.

Bostick Ultraset Adhesive or Sika T55J. A wobble "S" (like a snake) along the back of each board. Or spread with a 3mm notched trowel.


Powernailer with powercleats for the secret nailing.

I don't like staples into Yellowtongue

Note: You can only secret nail to 85mm in width. Any wider and you will have to topnail.

Yes, You can secret nail wider boards, but it is not advisable. If you do, you will not get any support from the manufacturer of the flooring as the installation procedure is not recommended.

You are getting ripped larry we pay $120 a box incld GST.

if possible lay the flooring the same direction as the sheets and use 45mm secrete nails into the existing joists. Over partcile board i use a full trowel glue uisng 3mm v notch for polyurthnae glue or the sellys trowel (3mm v at 25mm centers) which comes with there glue.

good idea to re-screw the partcile board down to the joists before laying as the framing nails used by the carpernters can move.

if you want the s/steel nail heads as a feature you could always go back and nail it off once its sanded and polishsed.

Boy talk about wild variations in pricing for spotted gum. Some companies asking well over $80 a m2 for standard grade. Found some for $45 m2 but would have to pay a fair bit for transport - from Sydney to South West VIC.
Is anybody aware of anywhere in Victoria that is reputable and not extortionists with their pricing?
