How long to lay jarrah flooring

Hi all,

I've been reading the forums for a while but have got a question that i haven't seen answered before

Ive got 130m2 of jarrah 80 x 19 SN EM flooring to lay on battens over a concrete slab, ive got a porta nailer and am what i'd call a good amature i dont woodwork for a living but can do most things fairly well, i've done this sort of thing before but it was a while ago now.

i'm chasing an idea on how long it moght take to put down, rooms are big ie main area 12 x 5.5 large bedroom 4.4 x 4.4, long passage 9 x 1.7 and a few robes and pantry / linen

Sorry for the long first post, i know it's going to depend on a lot of things so i'm just chasing a rough idea, hopefully from one of the pros saying "id expect to lay ??m2 myself in day

Hi Matt

I just layed a 15mm T&G bamboo floor, direct stick. I had not done this B4, I layed 40sqm in 4 days (9.30 to 2.30 pm - 5hrs a day), on my own.

Now it depends on the tricky bits ie: around door frames / amount of cutting / how far away the drop saw is etc. etc.

So that work out at 2m an hour, give or take lunch/coffee/smoko breaks.

Maybe, give yourself 4 or 5 days? Who knows?

You'll be up and down like a brides nighty, so it takes a fair bit out of you physically.

I generally start off in a blaze of glory and then start to burn out around 2ish, so when I feel myself wearing down I concentrate on doing some cutting in type work, or setting myself up for a big burst the following morning.

Mate, if you are doing it yourself, Take as long as is needed.

Don't rush yourself.
Forget how many Sq M a pro can lay.

Cut the floor in.

And take your time.

If you rush to get it down, you will not be taking due care.

BTW...Are you using Hardwood Battens?


Pine battens are OK with the Porter Powernailer, But you may need to go with 70mm wide. Also, Glue and nail (Bostik Ultraset).

Battens are 70 x 35 on side so 70mm bearing surface at 450mm centres, wasn't planning on glueing just the nails, anyone else think i need to glue or will nailing only be ok, i thought glueing would be too "rigid" and not allow the floor to move as reqd

Cost. I charge $600 per day, plus materials, most can be done in a day, although the more complex and the more colours can push it into a two day affair.

Any finisher should be able to do it, if he/she has a fair bit of patience.

Did you see the whole page I have on stencils? It outlines roughly how I do it.

As far as I'm aware, I'm the only bloke around who does it.

Sorry Matt I should have said I was direct sticking to concrete, I just thought that gunning the glue out and refilling the glue gun every metre or so would = your nailing time.

Also, as reference I am usung Sikken glue which remains sort of rubbery to allow for movement. Unlike liquid nails etc that hardens stiff.

i think you mean sika? if your direct sticking and installing on your own, probably 2 - 3 weeks, as everyone has said, take your time with it.

thanks josh, i'm not direct sticking but nailing to battens, any further thought on nail + glue or nail only???

You can nail only. But remember...You are fixing a hardwood flooring (very strong) to battens(very weak). What does this tell you?

Isn't it better to be sure to be sure than risk your floor?
