Shellac ok for Fireplace Mantel?

Hi All,

I am going to have a go at making a Fireplace Mantel.

Is it ok to use Shellac on a mantel? Will it handle the temperature changes etc.. ok?

They've been using shellac on fire place surrounds and over mantles for many long years with excellent results.
