I knocked up a quick meat mallet today and was wondering if anyone can suggest an appropriate finish for it.
I normally use a finish of EEE and Shellawax (liquid or creme) on bowls, boxes etc. but I'm not sure if this would be a good finish on something to come into contact with food.

To my knowledge the EEE & shellawax is non-toxic. Neil can correct me if I am wrong. So stick with using that. Otherwise leave it raw.

I agree with doorstop, I use cooking oil on wooden chopping boards etc.

I had been considering finishing with cooking oil when my wife said she had seen a show on TV which said only finish (in that case a chopping board) with mineral oil (never heard of that one http://ubb.ubeaut.com.au/ubb/confused.gif ) as cooking oils will go rancid.
Though I would imagine regular washing and the occasional re-application of cooking oil would prevent this.

Mineral oil is also known as paraffin oil. It will not go rancid and is ideal for your use.
I use walnut oil on bread boards etc with no ill effects or complaints to date.
Being a natural vegetable product I do not see it as having any bad characteristics and may be a avenue you may want to pursue with your meat mallet.

Organoil have just released a new product on to the market called WOOD WIPE. It is specifcally made for wooden cooking utensils, bowls and chopping boards. Like all of their oils it's food safe. It's made from a blend of citrus and nut oils. Cost is about A$8.00 for 250ml, you should be able to get it from Bunnings.

Thanks again for the info guys. Sounds like the Wood Wipe might be the way to go, I'll have to check it out.
