Inspiration needed for built-in wardrobes

I'm after some inspiration for our built-in robes.

We were going to use the Elfa system, but the quote of around $1500 for wire racks was a bit over the top. So it looks like we are going to run with MDF. I could probably use some Red Stringybark as false draw fronts to tart it up a bit, but that is about as far as I have gone.

Our style is minimalist, in that we have exposed timber floors and everything else is basically white or cream. We have flashes of timber throughout the house, more to pair with the floor than anything else.

The last set of built-ins I did was too chunky and I will eventually replace them.

So I am after some pics of well-done built-ins

Tips on how to fix it all together (cleat sizes etc)

Ideas on finishing the job.

We aren't looking at doors just yet.

The opening is 2650 H 2020 W 470 D

All suggestions welcome.

You might be better posting this thread in the Kitchen, Barthroom, Theatres section thats where all the cabinet questions seem to be. I did ours a couple of years ago out of whiteboard, pretty basic just some hanging spaces, shoe racks, drawer banks, and some shelves it works out fairly cheap. It stayed like that for about a year before we put the doors on. Anyway if you repost in the other section you'll probably get more response. Cheers

In this thread (around post 15?) there's a pic of a basic job, from memory it took 2 sheets MDF, one of ply and a few 50x19mm pine rails.

Easy to make and easily modified. :thyel:

Exactly the sort of stuff I am looking for!!

I dont have a lot of space to work with, but am looking at some hanging space, about 8 drawers, some shoe racks, some bench top space and then some little knick knack places I cna include on walls and so on.

One word of advice that should be obvious, but is somehow oft overlooked: don't forget to allow for door widths when planning the layout, especially not any overlaps on sliding doors.

It's a right PITA when you finally hang the doors and discover they don't open wide quite enough to access the drawers. (A mistake you only make once, but once is more than enough. :- )

When I built my house I had built ins in all five bedrooms as well as the double linen cupboard and entry hall cupboard and I built the shelves along the same lines in all of them.

I didn't build drawers in them but I used 40 x 19 meranti to make the frame work and 16mm Pyneboard for the shelves. I covered the edge of the pyneboard with a round moulding. I then painted (or should I say my wife painted them).
