I am renovating our kitchen and I am pulling up the old lino which is glued to masonite. My problem is the nails they used to nail the masonite down with. They are the ridged ones used for masonite etc. and I cant pull them out of the cypress floor , the heads pull through the hammer or if they come out they damage the timber. Does any one have any hints on how to get them out. Thanks for your help.
try levering them out very gently with a set of end cutters, but don't squeeze too hard or you'll cut the nail. If they are rusted in, try squirting one or two with a bit of wd40, let them sit a few hours and try again. I don't know if it will stain or no though.

You would probably do better with a pair of pincers. An old wood workers nail removing tool. It would also be better if they were a bit blunt so they don't cut the nails off.

Been around for over 100 years in one form or another. May also be found at garage sales, flea markets, etc. Place a steel spatula, or similar, under the prying foot for reduced dig-in.

My favourite tool for this type of work is the Excalibur nail pliers they are fantastic. I bought then to remove the nail from Jarrah floorboards when I had pulled them up ... except I pulled the nails from the pointy end so as it didn't damage the top surface ... in fact many of the nail "holes" were still filled ... but you don't have the luxury of pulling from the other side. :roll:
