Hello
I'm a consumer who does not really know much about different brands of timber suppliers.
I've had a look at the timber floors for these 2 companies and I personally could not tell a different in terms of quality.
However, boral appears to be expensive (to deck my house with boral silkline blackbutt costs almost 10,000, while the same blackbutt by Big river timber only costs me 7000)
Why such a big price difference??

Are we talking external timber decking?
What size ?
How many metres?
Kiln Dried or air dried?
One may have quoted retail and the other may have given you a trade price..

I'm getting 2 rooms in the house done for a total of 75 square meters
the price I wrote down included ripping up the carpets and laying down the floor boards
Boral Silkline 2-trim (blackbutt) = ~9200 AUD
Big River Timber Armourfloor (blackbutt) = ~ 7300 AUD
I'm not sure how it's dried to be honest, as I am no builder =P
But yea, how does boral justify charging such a higher price for the same timber that another company offers?

Your talking internal T + G flooring and not exterior decking... The difference may well be the difference in appearance as well as the trade or retail price..
Is it feature grade or Std and better or Select grade that you got prices on
These are the allowable defects in the appearance and all effect the final price....Feature will have more gum veins select will be almost clear
As for the product names can't help with that ....

I don't know the Boral product, but the Big River flooring is essentially ply, and from our experience is a terrific product.
We installed it (blackbut) through our entire house five years ago, glued to concrete. I chose it over "real" timber to eliminate any problems with movement.
If it's the least expensive option, don't hesitate!

I just looked at the web and could not find anything on boral silkline.
I know of Bigriver product.
I know that Boral have excellent products and are a trustworthy company. Big river is also a fine company with a excellent product.I know that B/R product is able to be re sanded at least once again in its life time giving about 15 to 20 years life. Their product s stable and should with care last as long as 15/20. If Borals Product has the same wear thickness , then it also should give you the same performance. If it has a lesser wear thickness then it is not worth it. The wear thickness is the top single layer of veneer . On big river it is 2.5mm thick .Resanding is not recomended but is able to be done with care and done by a experenced proffesional. Exposure of the ply base is probable if over sanded. Most floaters will give you a life of 5 to 10 years before they need resurfacing. In my opionion they are a tempory floor covering much like carpet and tiles. They are great in comercial applications as they can be renewed as the decore is needed to be changed. For a life time lasting floor and for pure economics, then you need to look at a traditional 19mm thick timber floor. The upfront cost may be higher then a floater, but as the years wind on you will appreaciate the cost saving in the resanding . It is pure solid timber.

After a lot of reseach into different wooden floors i used two strip slilkwood blackbutt for the reno i just finished . i think it cost me $73 a square meter and $16 to lay . The thing i liked the most about blackbutt is the density (hardness ) compared to other wood like tas oak . also it the first thing people coment on when they walk in the door . It really does look amaseing. I have a couple of phottos but i do not know how to attach them as i am a new member ..if you pm me i can send you them .
