Hi,
I have bought a house that has Jarra floor boards but the owners have deceided to carpet.
Before I move in Im going to sand and polish the floors but beneath the underlay is a rubber coating on the floor boards.
Whats the easiest way to remove this other than sanding it away?

I haven't seen what you are talking about ... but could you use a heat gun an scraper?
Ive never seen it before either, seems like a thin self adhesive rubber coating over the floor.
Maybe to protect the floors beneath from High Heels?

Or is it just the black part of the old underlay that has become stuck over the years.
Try a heatgun on an area that is inconspicous to see if it can be lightly heated and then rubbed off. :?
Will give it a go - didnt know underlay had a black surface on it - well typically speaking.
This rubber stuff your talking about is fairly common and sands off as easy as pi.
So don't worry about heat guns and scrapers, just hit it with some 24 grit sand paper and you'll be fine.

I have someone coming in to do the sanding and coating for me, I just need to prepare the floors (ie remove carpet and tack strips).
Removing this rubber wouldn't be much extra for a pro when sanding the floor in preparation would it?

Well the floors arent jarra as described by the bld inspector - they are pine which is great!
Also turns out there was no underlay, just the original carpet laid in 1944 when the house was built that was glued down.
A weekend of running around on hands and knees with paint scrapers and its all done - what a pain!
Will post a pic when its done.
