Am currently digging out under my house. Have begun thinking about flooring (its workshop/storage/wine cellar) and thinking that simple is probably better. Possibly crushed granite? Anyway, any ideas for a cheap option?

Concrete is probably the simplest. It can be swept or hosed, it will support machinery or timber racks, it can be angled for drainage, it will reinforce the footings. Gravel might be low cost but what about the times you happen to run down there in yr bare feet and then have to crunch over all that razor sharp granite ?

I don't know whether you can get it, or whether you think its suitable, but I've used a lot of crushed recycled concrete. Its dirt cheap and generally a nice gray colour, although there are the odd bits of wood or brick mixed in. I bought it from Queensland Recycling, and I think I paid about $12 a sqm so its dirt cheap, and environmentally friendly too.

On ours I used some 250 x 250 x 35 mm cement pavers I picked up during a council pick up. I didn't quite have enough to fill in some 50 mm gaps down one side of the cellar so I just filled these in with a light sand cement mix.
A good source of recycled materials is www.freecycle.org last year I gave away about 100m2 of pavers. It saved me lugging them to the dump and someone else got a free patio.
