security options for timber casement windows

Has anyone got ideas for security options for timber casement windows ?

I know I could just fit bars, but by the time you fit bars and fly screens the windows just don't look as good anymore. Maybe something like crimsafe that serves both but then there's no way to open the window.

Double hung windows I take it I can just install crimsafe solid mesh to the exterior of the window frame.

Anyone seen any ideas ?

There are a couple laminated glasses which might do the trick, they are almost impossible to smash in, kinda like the windscreen on the your car, it will smash but the glass is held together by the laminate. Not 100% secure but worth a look at.

You can get casement window winders that allow for a flyscreen to be fitted but you can still wind out the window from inside? Maybe that would help ... although I don't know what a crimsafe is.

How do you put bars on a casement window - they'd have to be a fair way out to allow the window to open - or am I missing something. Re the winders - you can have all mine - they're all in a very fetching mission brown. I think I'm going to replace them with friction hinges - I think that's what they're called - not really a hinge at all but a pivot at the bottom and top of the window that also hold the window in place. They seem to hold quite well. But then I'm converting mine from top opening (not sure what it's called) to casement so have no existing hinges.

Yeah, I have thought of that, but was more after the ventilation while remaining secure. Being able to leave the house open at the front which being out the backyard and not have to worry about someone nicking stuff through an open window. Or going out for a while and not having to worry about locking the house up and

I'm thinking about the glass on some french doors opening onto a deck. The side of the doors will have double jung windows which can be made secure - Keep the doors closed and windows open while not home. The glass should handle the security problem.

Crimsafe(tm) is a basically a fancy and expensive flyscreen/mesh for windows and doors. The stuff is tough and has other benifits like being able to see outside while people can't see in.

If you want to be able to lock the sash open there are lockable casement stays available.

Page 50 of the catalogue has a casement stay lock (item 0311) which costs about $13. The casement stay (item 0309) is about $26. Just priced them for my casement windows.
