How to louden your TS Blade

Some time ago some of you may remember I did some comparative measurements of sound levels produced by various TS blades. My concern was more from the point of view on my neighbors which I'm sure did not appreciate the "screaming banshee" 40 tooth general purpose blade that came with the saw. I started by experimenting with several variables including removing the throat plate - which didn't make any difference. The upshot of all that was I lashed out and bought a low noise 96 tooth blade and yes it was definitely quiter.

Since then I bought a 24 tooth rip blade and a triple chip melamine cutting blade which are also surprisingly quiet.

I recently replaced the conventional throat plate with a zero clearance plate which makes all the blades sound much louder.

Has anyone else experience this effect using a low or zero clearance insert?

Hi Bob, don't know if I can help much as mine doesn't scream too much. Does it make a difference if the DC is on or not?

My thicknesser used to scream with the DC on it, but as soon as you took it off the scream disappeared. It turned out to be the plastic chip deflector being a couple mm away from the knives causing the noise. Got rid of the Chip deflector, no more screaming.

Here is a pic of my ZC insert. I drilled some holes in it to help catch some dust that is thrown off at the front of the blade......might help with the noise.

my tablesaw does'nt screem either, hav'nt ever heard one that does, or do you mean the sound it makes whilst cutting? blade choice would certainly effect the noise here...

my thicknesser screems, it's the dust choot, it acts like a horn.it's a strong metal one and i put deadening compound on the inside of it but it made no difference...

The quietest saw blade that I have found is made by Kenafusa in Japan.
These blades are so quiet, you don't even know the saw is going.
I schit you not. They are the best. Superclean cut and resharpen to as new.

I quite understand how the zero clearance plate is causing the extra noise.
It is making a basic siren..... as the teeth pass thru the close gap they chop the air causing the noise... both back and front..... it will be worse with the blade at full height.
To reduce this problem open up the gap OR round the edges on the throat plate arround where the teeth travel thru.
Yep I know this sort of reduces the effectiveness of a zero clearance plate ..... but hey thats life.

I agree that the good quality finer blades seem quieter.
I have several CMT blades..... the 20t ripping blade is significantly noisier... bothe running and cutting.
Still much quieter than my previous two benches by orders of magnitude.

Just as an aside.... I've been cuting a bit of heavy MDF of late with the blade at low cutting angles.......I was surprised how quietly it was cutting.

OH another aside
I hve two shaped high density foam blocks inside my overhead guard to both smooth the air flow and to damp some noise.

Joe, could you provide a bit more ifno on this. I would be interested on trying this at school.

I upgraded my saw about 18 months back. With 10" CMT blades, 40 and 60 tooth, it is not banshee-like at all. The previous saw had a 12" blade and both combination and cross-cut screamed loudly. Very impressive indeed. made the ears ring. Neither saw had a zero tolerance insert.

Another option are the laminated blades from Leitz Tooling. I don't have one yet (but I will be buying one to try it out when I can get my workshop setup again after moving) but the blurb sounds interesting. www.leitz.com.au

That's the second recommendation I've given them in one night, and no, I don't work for them or have a financial interest. According to my brother who is a cabinet maker, they are the industry standard that others measure themselves against.

Bob, did you download & watch Zed's jointer vid (one of the first ones uploaded)?

He mentioned the fact that his machine had some sort of noise reducing design to the ends of the outfeed table, which was a sort of a comb idea, bit hard to explain but instead of the end of the table being solid, it was sort of slotted, with the slots the same size as the teeth. Clear as mud?

Checkout the vid mebbe. You could maybe use experiment with the shape of the opening in the throat plate to determine the impact on the sound produced.

Best Idea I've heard all day, and I've heard some doozies. OK will give it a go when I have some spar etime. one thing I've thought of is a series of holes in the throat plate in a fan shape coming out from the end of the blade.
