What is the best way to apply finish to achieve a professional job - brush, rubbing/wiping or spraying? I have little knowledge of finishing although I have read the Ubeaut finishing book, so am not completely in the dark.
thanks

It all depends on what type of finish you want. For shellac, I use a cloth pad. Same for Wipe-On poly or oil. That's about all I use.
Go to the forum videos section and download Neils 3 part Finishing Video. It will help you a lot.
Thanks Gumby
Interesting article in this month's Fine Woodworking about applying wax. He used some cheesecloth with the wax inside a ball of cloth, and the wax apparently comes through at the right rate.
Trouble is, I've looked for cheesecloth in Australia before, and haven't found anyone that carries it, or even knows what it is.

Try muslen/muslin (sp), I think it is the same thing, see one of the 'Older Dears' at Spotlight and she will know exactly what you are talking about.
Gumby, could you point me to where the videos are lurking. Can't seem to find them.
Never mind gumby. found it.
It comes in rolls and is usually double thickness ie its woven in a tube.I guess for wrapping
cheeses.
I think you can get it from industrial supply places like black woods. I have a roll of it I've had for years, its great for polishing the car ,but when you cut it it makes lots of lints bits.
