Hi,
Amateur here. :U
Just wondering if anyone could give me some advice on a moderatley inexpensive Wireless Router/Modem, which could work in a two story (52 square) house which unfortunately has concrete floors, walls and ceilings.
I currently have a D-link DSL-G604T Wireless ADSL Router. :( It only seems to reach half of the house.
Would it be smart to purchase a new router? Or a extender?
Any advice would be great!

I would think that you need a 2nd wireless unit, configured to bridge mode. Be aware though, that this unit will run at 1/2 speed on the wireless.
Yep its a common problem.
In schools we normally use another building and point a directional antenna to the other building and another back to the other building this cuts costs and works well and can cover up to three floors.
You could try the way cliff advised and spend more money then other is to place the Router in a staircase see what type of access that gives you if it works then run a phone extension lead to the Router for your Internet access.
Or take it back and tell them your problem and ask for a solution.
Last of all please secure you network using WEP as I have access to the net from other peoples networks in my area and they don't have any idea as they have no security set up, I COULD BE DOWNLOADING ANYTHING.
You should be able to get a TP-Link wireless access point for less than $100 retail.
As an IT Consultant I have a client with a 2 story waterfront home, same story, brick and cement everywhere, and I used a MIMO rangemax router from Netgear (supposedly better range and reception than standard wireless), AND a rangemax card and get fairly consistant signal. Even using the rangemax router and a normal card, I do get some signal, so the MIMO technology does make a difference in this situation. I have no doubt a normal wireless router and normal wireless card would not work. For best results you need a MIMO router AND MIMO wireless card.
Having said that, unfortunately you will never know unless you try and I don't guarantee the better range wireless devices will work for you.
Netgear use 'rangemax' Belkin use 'G-Plus', but whatever manufacturer you use, it will specify 'MIMO'
The other option is optional stronger antennas, to do this make sure your network cards antenna that comes with it is removable. Also keep in mind if any of the systems are laptops, the built in wireless cards obviously have tiny built in antennas and pose a problem in all but the most basic close by wireless networking - but thats just my experience.
One Netgear router will cost you about $250.
For that you can buy 2 TP-link access points & a lenght of cable & still have change.
One device or two devices and cabling? Defeats the purpose of wanting a wireless network IMO Cliff....
Not everything is about saving a couple of $$$.

The TP-Link gear does work, I installed one in a downstairs office for a builder & his wife can access it from her laptop upstairs.
