Just read a great book and recommend it. Just be careful near the end. Certainly gets to you and brings back memories of your old dog, wife wondered why I was so cut up reading it:C

Yes pet stories in general are hard to take. I remember when Dr. Harry's border collie Rosie died and he said a little poem on TV. Not a dry eye could have been watching that one. I know I bawled like a two year old.

Things We Can Learn From A Dog To Better Our Lives:
1. Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.
2. Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure ecstasy.
3. When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.

Yep, we are big softies when it comes to how dogs, I know I am. I have to fight with them to get the couch or chairs around here
My dog is an idiot...
This thread has reminded me of years ago, when Dad asked me what to name our (old) dog, a purebred red/blue heeler, that must have been a throwback, beautiful black coat, face like the one on blue heelers.
I found this poem, and Dad liked the name, so it stuck
An emerald is as green as grass;
A ruby red as blood;
A sapphire shines as blue as heaven;
A flint lies in the mud.

To catch the world's desire;

Has anyone heard Peter Fitzsimons telling the story about driving across the Sydney harbour bridge in the rain, behind a ute with a dog in the back? Goes on to explain how some dogs are like golfers, but this one was a rugby player. I was driving when I heard it, and nearly had to pull up I was laughing so hard.
It's probably in one of his books, but if you can find a recording of him telling it it's a keeper. Someone may be able to find a link to it.
How can you not be sooky they're a constant source of amusement, this is new dog he's learning fast, just can't read all the little squiggles on the ruler and having a hard time holding the saw, as you can see from his joinery technique.
