Lintel Specification
Hi
I have a weatherboard, Cal. bungalow with a tiled roof.
However, the back extension of the house is a single storey lean-to with a flat corrugated iron roof.
In the rear exterior wall of the lean-to I want to install a window that will require the cutting of two studs. Window width will be about 1700mm.
The extension is old enough that only hardwood studs appear to have been used.
What size lintel should I use given the roof is corrugated iron?
I guess I'll be using a length of about 2.5m, checking into four studs and butting/nailing against another two.
Someone told me 245mmx45mm which is $75 for a 2.7m length at Home Hardware. Or can I use something smaller given the roof is tin? Or bigger?
Thanks
Laurence

Laurence, the lintel size is determined by - the the width of the opening & the roof load, bearing on the opening.
The roof load for a skillion roof on an outside wall is usually determined taking in to account half the rafter span [internally] plus the eaves length.
If you supply a detailed drawing I can give an indication of the required lintel size.
